The Gambia, a narrow
state on the west coast of Africa which borders the River Gambia, was
renowned for its stability until its government was overthrown in a coup
in 1994. Then 1996 saw a nominal return to civilian rule. The
population of about 1.4 million comprises several ethnic groups, including
the Mandinka, the Fulani, and the Wolof. English is the official
language. The dominant religion is Islam, only about 9% of the
