Austria, located in
the heart of Europe, is slightly smaller than the state of Maine with a
population of 8.2 million. Austrians are proud of their heritage,
which includes Roman Catholicism. Therefore, all other religious
groups are suspect, especially evangelicals who are considered a
cult. Only about 20% of the people have ever had any contact with
the Gospel - a needy mission field. Friendship evangelism and
Bible study groups are effective ways of spreading the Good News in this German-speaking
country. Also, being in close proximity with the newly opened
countries to the east, there is much opportunity to take the Gospel to
formerly closed areas.
