Burundi, about
one-fifth the size of North Carolina, is densely populated with 6.1
million people. Nearly 20% of the population is AIDS infected - no
family is untouched by this plague. Thousands of children are
orphaned, many of them AIDS infected. Since 1993 civil war has
continued to ravage the country. Catholicism is professed by 78% of the people, while
5% are Protestant. There are 60 assemblies
in the country. The official languages are Kirundi, French, and
Swahili.
