Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We will be going on furlough shortly (notice the change of address at the top of this letter). Sandy and I are very tired. Please pray for us.

News from Centro Bíblico, the assembly where we fellowship: they are very sad that we will be going on furlough. Jorge and Elisabet are getting married on the 15th. Henry and Lisa Sardiña are praying about coming back again in January. We would like them to come back in the will of the Lord. Please pray as the enemy is trying hard to destroy this small assembly where the Word of God is preached faithfully. Bob Billings is visiting from New Jersey and will be speaking on Sunday, the 9th of October.

The prison ministry, has been going very well. The weekly attendance, this year, has been between 12 and 26. The meetings last for two hours so there’s plenty of time to do diverse activities. We start off with a time of sharing, this is followed by a time of singing led by Reginaldo, an inmate who brings a guitar, then I show part of an evangelistic video, I usually make a few comments about it afterwards and ask some questions, this is followed by our regular interactive Bible study which I lead, we’re studying the gospel of John, verse by verse (we previously did Romans), we end up with a short time of prayer. I always bring lots of free evangelistic materials for their use. Some of the men are very active during the week and share those materials with other inmates who for various reasons cannot or will not come to the meetings. This is not so easy, it costs them a lot! Please pray for these brothers who face much opposition on a weekly basis. Javier, from the assembly, will be taking over that ministry now that we’ll be away. Rogerio, a brother from Brazil, has indicated that he would like to help too.

Esteban has completed all 35 Emmaus courses in Spanish and will be receiving his certificate shortly. He is the fifth man to have done too! The previous four were prisoners at the jail. Three of them, Cesar Julio, Raul, and Mark have been released. They are now working in other parts of Spain and continue to grow in the Christian life.

Family news: Josh, 21, has decided to stay in Spain to finish school. He is getting a small apartment with Daniel, a friend of his to share expenses. We will miss him greatly!

Please keep us in your prayers,

July 4th, 2005

Hi everybody, Happy 4th of July!

Here's a thought from today's Choice Gleanings Calendar:
For, lo, He that formeth the mountains…the Lord, The God of Hosts, is His name. Amos 4:13.
The beauty and immensity of the Colorado mountains inspired Katherine Bates to write the text for “America The Beautiful.” She felt deeply about its message and said, “We must match the greatness of our country...with personal godly living”. Another patriot said, “The moral strength of a nation rests upon the knees of God's people”. On this Independence Day let us remember that our national dependence upon God begins with individuals like you and me. —E. Dyck
O beautiful for pilgrim feet, whose stern impassioned stress, A thoroughfare for freedom beat across the wilderness! America! America! God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, thy liberty in law! —Katherine Lee Bates

About Centro Bíblico, the small assembly in Valladolid where we fellowship: José Antonio, a Spaniard recently saved, has been baptized and added into fellowship. His wife, Luisa, had patiently and prayerfully waited for over a decade for his salvation. Rogerio and Kátia, a lovely Brazilian young Christian couple, have been received into fellowship too as have Javier and Belén, a middle-aged Spanish couple. Carlos and Rocío have sadly decided, after a quick look at the assembly, to go and worship somewhere else.

Henry and Lisa Sardiña have been in Spain since January and went to Madrid yesterday afternoon as they are living for the States tomorrow morning. We’ll all miss them greatly! They and their family have been a tremendous encouragement for us and the assembly. They’re praying about coming back in January. We all hope they will! Later we’ll find out the will of the Lord.

Please pray for Betty, Sandy’s mom, as she will be having knee replacement surgery on July 7th. Sandy, a nurse, left last week to be with her parents in New Jersey and help them through this ordeal. We understand that the rehab will be very painful. Josh, Adam and I have to make do without her until the middle of August! Please, pray for us! Before leaving Sandy was able to complete the Emmaus course: Lecciones para la vida cristiana (Lessons for Christian Living) at the ladies’ meetings she started and has been leading.

The prison ministry, as usual, is going very well. The weekly attendance this year has been  between 14 an 26. We’ve finished a verse by verse study of Romans and are now on chapter 3 of John. Cesar Julio, Raul, and Anya have completed all 35 Emmaus courses that we have in Spanish and have received their certificate. Mark is almost done while Javier and Esteban have done more than half of them. They do them during the week and I correct them later on. Franco, a converted Jew and Emil, a new Christian from Russia, have asked me to baptize them at the jail. All three of us need to write letters to the warden and ask his permission. Please pray! I have been writing  evangelistic articles in El termómetro, the free monthly magazine at the jail for a full year now!

God bless you. Thank you for praying for us.

Hi everyone,

Hope you're doing well. Here is some news from Valladolid, Spain:

We’re still meeting with José Manuel and Josefina several times per week. They’re a very religious couple with whom we have had many good opportunities to witness to. Through them we have also met their friends Jesús and Ana and Jesús’ friend, Emilio. We are also becoming good friends with all of them. Please pray for their salvation!

Maya finally called Sandy! They met and Sandy was so pleased to hear that Maya had read all of the evangelistic materials she had given her during the Holidays. We had not heard from her since and Sandy thought she might never hear from her again, instead they had a lovely meeting and Maya had several questions about our faith in Christ. Pray!

Javier and Belén are now attending most meetings and have shown much interest. Belén even has been coming to the weekly ladies’s Bible study that Sandy has been leading. Pray that they’ll be asking for fellowhip into the assembly shortly.

I’m still writing articles for El termómetro, the free magazine at the jail where I have weekly meetings with the prisoners. Well over a thousand inmates receive it besides the guards and administrative staff. The gospel is clearly explained each time. I thank God for such an opportuniy! Last week, 26 inmates came to the meeting, a record! PTL Please pray for safety and courage for Jawod, a Muslim, who is seeking the true God. He is being persecuted for coming to these meetings. He’s an avid reader and I have given him much good, evangelical literature in Spanish, English, French, and Arabic languages.

What a blessing it has been for our family and the assembly to have Henry and Lisa Sardiña with us for five weeks now! Three of their six children are here too. It has been a pleasure to watch as they have all embraced the Spanish culture! They’re working so hard to learn Spanish too! Henry, of course, having been born in Cuba speaks it fluently. He has been teaching extensively about New Testament principles of gathering in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Everyone is being blessed and is learning much too! DV they’ll be here till July and are looking for guidance from the Lord beyond that point. Pray!

This winter, Valladolid has been hit hard with the flu, we all had it! It has also been a much colder winter than normal! Valladolid is infamous for being foggy and from November though January it was foggier than London! We’re so thankful it’s over now! It's so nice to see the sun again!

God bless you and please keep us in your prayers.

Dearest Friends, Family, and Prayer Partners,

Happy Thanksgiving!

As I am writing this letter, I realize that all over America, people are celebrating Thanksgiving. What a happy time of year this is as we give thanks to God for His wonderful provisions, blessings, and mercies for all of us! It’s also the time when families get together in sweet fellowship with one another.   How good is God to our country!

Here in Spain, it is not a holiday and life goes on as usual. Both Josh and Adam have school today and Sandy and I are going about our ministries. We will however have a bit of a special meal on Sunday in between the Lord’s Supper and the time I have to leave to go to the jail for my regular meeting with the prisonners. We are so thankful to the Lord for the privilege of serving Him here in Spain! Thank you also to all of you that make it possible with your prayers and practical fellowship.

As we look back on 2004, we have much to thank our God for. Following are a few of the highlights of this year.

So far this year alone, I have corrected 94 Emmaus courses and 11 courses from Everyday Publications, all in Spanish, of course!

We have had numerous meetings and get togethers with many good contacts that we have made over the years both here in Valladolid and in Palencia where we used to live.

As many as 18 men have attended the weekly, two-hour meetings at the jail.

Thousands of tracts have been distributed and much other evangelistic material too.

June 6th, D-Day, we started to fellowship with and helped re-open Centro Bíblico, the small assembly that had been closed for 15 months. There are now 12 adults in fellowship.

July: 1) We helped out the assembly in Soria with a GLO team during their evangelistic campaign. 2) I started a leadership training program at Centro Bíblico that included three Spaniards. One of them, José Manuel, has grown much and is showing signs that he will make a good elder in the future. 3) My mom survived a heart attack!

August, we attended the european assembly missionary conference in France.

September saw my first monthly article in El termómetro, the magazine of the jail.

October and November, Sandy’s 18-day visit to New Jersey, where she spoke at the Regional Ladies’ Missionary Conference held at our commending assembly in Kearny. Please pray for the salvation of our neighbors and dear friends, José Manuel and Josefina.

Dearest Friends, Family, and Prayer Partners,

The jail ministry is going very well. The weekly attendance has been very good (up to 18). I show a short video testimony or part of an evangelistic film. We’re also doing an interactive study of Romans together. They have many questions and comments. I give them Emmaus Bible Courses to do during the week. After finishing their exams, I correct them and make comments then return the exams to them the following Sunday. César Julio has completed all 35 Spanish courses! Therefore, he has received a certificate and a William Macdonald New Testament Commentary in Spanish. He is now doing the courses from Everyday Publications in Canada.

Since the last newsletter, the Lord has led us to go help and fellowship with a tiny assembly that had been closed for 15 months. We are thankful that on June 6th we were able to help them reopen the building and that there are now nine people in fellowship. Additionally, 7 children plus 4 teens and a few adults come on Sundays. One mother, Pili, has been teaching Sunday School. We have enjoyed and been blessed much during the Lord’s Suppers. I have started a leadership program with three men.

The Bible studies with the gypsies will restart in September. Seeing the changes in some of them over the years has been a real blessing to us. In July, we helped out at an assembly in Soria, a small town less than three hours away, with their evangelistic campaign. A GLO team from the assemblies in Scotland came with many young people from the UK.

Friendship Evangelism is a large part of our ministry. Sandy meets regularly with several women. Some of the men I meet with are Arabs from North Africa; many of them enjoy speaking French with me. Other men like to practice their English. Most conversations are with Spaniards or Latinos, though. We have a good relationship with our sons’ friends and their parents too. We enjoy meeting with them as we are able to.

Besides tract distribution, I’m also offering much free literature: Bibles, New Testaments, Gospel of John, calendars, books, booklets, Emmaus courses, and the Jesus video & DVD. Thank you for your prayers and for making all of this possible.

Dearest Friends, Family, and Prayer Partners,

We spent most of the summer on furlough. Because this was our first time back we felt we should spend most of our time in New Jersey , our home state. We also spent two weeks in Canada where Serge was born. We saw his entire family, some relatives, and he spoke at several assemblies in French, English, and even Spanish!

Sandra and I want to express our greatest appreciation for all the loving kindness that was shown to us during our visit by so many of you. We tried to visit as many assemblies as we could but obviously in such a short time it was not possible to go to each one. If we didn’t get to see you, please forgive us. DV next time we’ll visit with you.

After a short period of readjustment, we’re back in the swing of things. The jail ministry is going well. The attendance has been very good (about 10) and we have seen many blessings. The guys are so glad that I’m back! I started doing an interactive study of Romans with them. They love it and are really participating. What a joy for me! Please pray as many inmates are still not allowed to come to these weekly meetings.

The Bible studies with the gypsies have started again. This time we’re studying Proverbs. Considering their lifestyle, I think this is a very important book for them.

A brand new program for us is the free distribution of evangelistic calendars. In the past, we worked with an assembly in another town, Palencia . These include daily devotions, stories, testimonies, etc. It can be a wonderful tool and we hope to make many good contacts through them.

We found a reputable printer, Felix, who printed 5,000 invitations. Then I made some changes for a second batch of 10,000. I have been going door-to-door and started to distribute those also. Please pray that God will truly bless this evangelistic campaign. We bought 200 calendars and we would love to have to get more! Of course, Felix, who is not saved, received the very first calendar!

Recently we bought hundred of Bibles, New Testaments, and Gospels of John for free distribution. I’m also looking to buy good tracts and other evangelistic materials.
