The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern part (64%) of the island of Hispaniola; Haiti is situated on the western part of the island.  The total area of the country is 18,816 square miles, with a population of 8.7 million.  The official language is Spanish.  Religious freedom is granted, although 93% of the people are Roman Catholic.  There are approximately 140 assemblies in the country.
